Hi, we recently recorded a church service on a Sony DCR SR-100. I am wanting to know how I can take that file, and create "automatic chapters" or if that is even possible at all. I've only tinkered with Premiere in the past just to attempt looking at it, so if done in that app, I'd need a good link with instructions, or else some detail here if possible.

I think I have read something about Adobe Encore being useful for DVD authoring. It may be that I just need to use that.

Basically, right now, I don't think I want to go through and manually add the chapters, b/c that would really require watching and listening to the video in real time, in order to separate by topic/subtopic (it's a sermon). I was thinking that maybe it could just be set every 10 or 15 minutes.

Is there a way to do this that also can make sure (or at least attempt) to not break up any words (so chapter one doesn't end with "Revela..." and cut off, then chapter 2 starting "...tion.").

Any thoughts/suggestions would be appreciated, even if that is to say I need to ask in another specific forum.

I'm assuming you have Premiere Pro.

There's no easy shortcut for what you want, but setting timeline markers every 10 minutes or so is very easy by typing times into the program monitor CTI timer window and then hitting the numeric keyboard asterisk key with the timeline as the active window to set an unnumbered marker. Then navigate marker to marker and play a short section to check if the marker is in a reasonable place and drag it if not.

These timeline markers need to have something put into their properties (eg a chapter name) before they will transfer to Encore and become chapter marks for a DVD.

Not too much effort really, but not automatic.

Well, thanks for that information, anyway. I'm really new to the video stuff, so hopefully I can get going with it fairly well.

Sorry I didn't reply earlier: I just forgot to check up on this one! [blush]

What you are saying does sound like a good plan to me, considering that though it isn't automated, it is at least a little less manual than going through and manually initially setting the markers.

Maybe this weekend or else some time very soon, I'll give this all a shot.
