creating an rc startup script

I am trying to create a rc startup script for sybase and backup. I have created a file with the variables and command line to activate sybase and backup, but when i reboot my unix server all i get is dots going across the screen instead of the standard start/stop/ok screen going thru the process's. I am running HP-UX ver 11.0 64bit with sybase 12.0 64bit version, if anyone has any ideas or suggestions i would really appreciate it.
