Plain and simple

How does one create an intranet?

Thanks

An intranet is nothing more than a website that is not accessible via the internet.

A quick startup would be:

1. Create DNS 'A' record on LAN DNS server pointing to the local IP address of web server. You can name the 'A' record pretty much anything but try to stay away from anything that would normally be found on the net; in other words don't use a fully qualified domain name (FQDN). Use something like 'intranet'.

2. Create a new website on the web server with a host header consisting of the same name you used in the 'A' record on the DNS server. (our example here: 'intranet' no quotes of course)

3. Create your intranet in the directory you pointed your newly created website. A great solution for an intranet is SharePoint. You don't have to worry about the design of the site at all. You will need SQL but if you don't mind using the free built-in version, you are good to go.

4. Have your users type the url for the intranet ('intranet') in their web browser.

Joe,

That seems to be so simple. You didn't mention anything about security and permissions. If you do it exactly as you outline, does the security take care of itself? I am having a huge problem trying to create a new intranet site on my PC. I currently have 4 intranet sites. They're all created as a "virtual directory" off of the default site. But I'm have permission issues with one that I tried creating the other day. It's almost a carbon copy of one of the other ones with some minor tweaking (like the OLE DB connection string has to point to the new path). The problem I am having is related to trying to run a query into the Access database that the intranet site uses. I get the famous "database is in use exclusive or you don't have permission to access it" error.

I would like trying creating a new website, so could you tell me how to do step 1? how does one go about creating a DNS 'A' record?

Thanks in advance,
Jerry
