creating a web spider in PHP

i am new to PHP,
i am curious, is there a way to create a web spider in PHP for the purpose of a search engine. If there is: what are the concepts of its operation?

have a look at mnogosearch.

but for a pure php solution - yes it is possible, although i feel that an interpreted language would be less than ideal for a multi-socket application like a spider.
