can anyone give me some direction on how to create a image whose background is transparent so that when i insert it in my page it won't cover up the background image for my page. In other words if i have a banner created in photoshop that says "my Page" i only want the letters to appear and not the background of the image.

any help is greatly appreciated!!

In Photoshop, create a new image on a transparent background. When you're ready to save it for use on the web go to File --> Save for Web As. Make sure it is a gif file (jped does not support transpareny - I don't think) and fool around until you get the quality you want.

correct, jpegs don't support transparency and will just show up as white.

also, go ahead and reduce the quality some as it will have little to no effect on the image quality and a great effect on the file size

using gif or png will provide what you want.

GIF only allow one of 256 colors to be transparent.

PNG allows you to have as many colors as you want in your document and you can have an alpha mask that says what part of your image will be more or less transparent and that can provide really nice effects! :) Gary Haran
