creating a tab delimited file

Hi -
I hope this is an easy one for you experts.....
I need to create a tab delimited flat file, but don't know how to specify the tab character in my record layout.
So, if I had:
01 NEW-RECORD.
05 DATA-ITEM1 PIC X(7).
05 DATA-ITEM2 PIC X(20).
.
.
.
how would I set up a 'tab' between these two?
Thanks much!
