Creating a sublist from a list in the parent site

Hi,

I don't know if this is at all possible...

I have a main site with a list of contacts (the default list as a matter of fact).

I'd like to create sub-sites and create lists (not views) within these subsites that will contain a subset of the contacts from the main site, based for example on the contact's department.

I should be able to use these sublists to assign tasks to people, for example.

I hope I was clear enough and I'd appreciate any suggestions.
