The way I initially (newbielly) set up a mailing list using sendmail was to create an alias in /etc/aliases that would consist of a few thousand names... like this:
-------------------
#/etc/aliases file
#
mailnglist: user1@aol.com, user2@aol.com, user3@aol.com, etc...
#
#end of file
-------------------

I was wondering 2 things:

1. Is this the easiest way to set up group mailing lists in sendmail?

2. I am really interested in qmail... and am actually hoping to install and run it on a separate machine. Then, when it is fully functional, I will use that machine as my main email server. What would be the easiest way to set up large mailing lists using qmail?

Thanks very much for any help you can supply!

try not!
do... or do not. there is no try!

There are probably easier ways than setting up a massive sendmail alias...

I've not got any personal experience with a particular list manager. However, I have looked into it a few times and there seem to be two main mailing list managers that people swear by (as opposed to swearing at...)

A lot of people swear by the "majordomo" package. This is a full mailing list solution written in perl, and I don't think it's specific to any particular MTA. ie, you can use it with sendmail or qmail.

If you want to go qmail, it seems that *the* mailing list manager to use is ezmlm. It integrates tightly with qmail and appears to work well for the people who use it.

Hope this helps.

--
Thanks AndyBo. I'll look into ezmlm.
=)

try not!
