Hope you guys/gals can help.

Presently, we are converting SGML files based on one DTD to SGML/XML/HTML files based on several other DTDs.

These are tagged scholarly/scientific articles (full text including, bibliography, tables, equations, etc.)

We do the translation using programs written in VB6, Python or C (string manipulation and search and replace).

Changes to the output specifications sometimes requires major modification of code, depending on who among us wrote the specific conversion program.

Maintainability of code also is a problem especially if the program's original author is not around/available as we programmers here do not always agree on the methods we use.

As an alternative to our current processes, I have suggested that we use XML as our base/starting format and use XSLT to do the conversion/translation.

I have very little knowledge of XLST but from what I have read so far I believe it is feasible.

In line with this, I was tasked with creating a short presentation displaying the benefits of using XSLT.

Am I right in my thinking that XSLT has a specific grammar that one should follow? If so then this could help us in our code maintainability.

Can you point me to links on this topic?
Has anybody done something similar?
Could you share?

I am a programmer and have not done any presentations before.
