I'm a print designer having to make a pdf that is editable by the client – but only in three places. The rest of the document should be locked.

If possible, I'd like to have control over the leading etc. of the text.

Assume I know nothing about Acrobat, but I do have distiller and porfessional. The original document is quark...

As long as they're just editing some text, the leading etc should hold. You might consider embedding the whole font rather than subset unless you're sure they have the correct font.

If they're going to edit a lot of text - partcularly add - you might run a tes by creating the pdf, open in Acrobat and play around in text edit to see the result. Really, Acrobat shlould not be used for purposes like this , except MINOR changes.

Have you considered protecting the document, allowing commenting, filling in form fields, and signing.

This would allow the client to make changes, and you the right to control what really gets changed.

I use this method to allow them to mark it up. I make the changes in the original authoring program.
