I have only one single boot parition that is about 76% free. How do you create a new partition from a boot volume? Is it even possible? computer management help says to right-click on unallocated space, but there is no unallocated space.
If there's no unallocated space, then you can't create a new partition without taking space (through the use of some third party utility like partition magic) from the C: drive. You could always add another hard disk.
You need to shrink the existing partition. From the newly created unallocated space you then can create your new partition. XP cannot do the shrinking with its native tools. Use Acronis Disk Director Suite, a fully featured trial is available as a free download:
Whatever you use to Resize your partition, these procedures are not without some risk, even though it is a very slight risk. Backup your valuable data first.
I use Partition magic in my shop to do this and have not had any problems as of yet, but as linney has said there is a risk that it can damage the existing portion of the partition, back up anything that you cant live without before you do anything.
Before God we are all equally wise - and equally foolish.
