You'd think this would be pretty easy to do, but I can't figure it out.

How do I create a retangle with no border? ie. if I have a white background and I want a grey box but with no border around it?

If I use the rectangle tool it automatically adds a border...

This is with Photoshop 6.

ps. It needs to be a 'proper' shape so I can apply blending options to it.

My rectangle is created with no border; are you sure you're not referring to the rectangular marquee tool?.

If you are using the rectangle tool then look on your new layer that the rectangle tool creates, and double click the shape icon to reveal the layer style options.

see if you can see what's making your border; maybe the stroke.
