The manuscript I typed for the client has 8 chapters, with 5 pages of front matter and 3 pages of back matter. I also have the front and back cover designs. She wants me to create a paperback-sized book for her in PageMaker that can be used as is for self-publishing. She plans to take the CD to a printshop and have them print a small run of paperbacks from the files I give her. (Unfortunately, she has not yet chosen a printer, so I cannot call him to see how he would like the files set up.)

I don't think the sizing and signature set up will be a problem, but would it be better for me to separate the front and back matter and each chapter into their own separate stories, or can I import the whole manuscript as one large story? If I do it as one large story, how do I ensure that each chapter will begin on a new page? I did the manuscript in MS Word 2000 and the cover designs in PageMaker 6.5. The finished paperback should be no more than 100 or so pages. Thank you for any and all suggestions. :)

Hello,
The best thing to do is to create the front and back section as a totally different file.
You will have 3 files.
front
end
rest of the book
Once the sections are all complete you will need to do the following.
Open the front section and go to utilties/book.
Select the rest of the book then the end files and add each one. They will show up in the window on the right.
Check any of the options then needed then close this box.
Now go to utilties/plugins/buildbooklet
Choose the layout you need for the book and any other of the options you need for the book.
Click ok. It will tell you that a new doc will be open and to save the orginal file. Click OK.
When the new file opens you will have the book with the sections in the correct place and set up as you need it printed.
I would suggest you find out what printer it will be printed on since this will affect the layout of the file. Pagemaker files are very dependent on the printer. Some file reformating and reflowing could occur if the printer information is very different.
Good luck
