creating a 3-dimensional coil or spring

i am working on my freshman design project for Drexel University and need help for what to do. I am usin g AutoCAD to try and draw a 3-dimensional spring, i am getting the spring in 2-d, but i do not know what to do to turn it into 3d, i have tried both the revolve ans extrude commands unsuccessfully, please let me know if you know what to do it would be greatly appreciated
