Create zip files larger than 2gb with tar

Please understand that I know little more about unix rather than how to spell it, be gentle! I am migrating a large amount of data off of a Unix system, this requires me to zip the files and ftp them over to a windows based staging area. As I understand it, older versions of tar have a 2gb size limit and I need a way to get around this.

Upgrading to the newer versions of tar etc are not possible! I have to work with what I have...

You could try compressing the files 'on the fly' See:
