Hi all,

I have just installed Red Hat Linux 7.1 and while I was installing this OS, I also made a boot diskette. But I find out this boot disk is just used for startup Red Hat Linux. So I wonder how to make a root disk so that I can boot system into ramdisk mode with this diskette, then I mount hard drive and do something in emergency cases. Until now, I tried many ways but don't get that. Please tell me how to make root disk ( and could you please tell step by step to implement it, I am very new to Linux world )!

Thanks very much.

Hi,

The redhat recommended way is to boot linux from installation floppy or CD and passing the parameter 'rescue' to the kernel. See --> . If you don't have an installation floppy you would cd to the 'images' directory of the CD (or grab from ftp) and do :

dd if=boot.img of=/dev/fd0

In addition to the above, an excellent tool to have up your sleeve is toms root/boot disk from .

Hope this helps
