I have an excel file with 124 tables( they only look like tables) that I need to paste links to in a rather large word document. I know that I can paste special each of them into the document but then I have to say "Yes" to update the links 124 times. I still need to have the option to update the links but I only want to have to answer once not 124 times. Basically I need to know if its possible to create 1 link to an Excel file from Word but be able to reference many parts of the excel file.

Thanx for your time

Hi Philly-44,

As one who is always wanting to "take the easy route" (also the most efficient), I have to suggest the following:

Given the magnitude of the number of "tables" in your Excel file, why not consider doing a "reversal" - i.e. use Excel as the main file, and embed Word objects within the Excel file. IF your Exel file contains other "sensitive" information, you can protect that data (including hiding), if the file will be sent to others.

You might well find that this alternative works MUCH better, for more than one reason. For example, when embedding (linking) Excel objects within Word, it is not always easy to get the Excel objects to be formatted and sized the exact same way as in Excel.

And of course, this method will cure your problem of having to update the links to the 124 tables.

I hope this helps, and that you will at least "give it a try". Please let me know (and other Tek-Tips users) whether this is a workable solution, and how you make out. Thanks.

Sounds like a really good solution and i'll defenitly try and let you know. Thanx

Dale Watson,

I tried your idea and though its very good it won't really work for my situation. The word document has a lot of very specific formatting and everytime I try to move it into an excel file it just gets messed up. Any other ideas?

Hi Philly-44,

Quick response for now, as I have to leave the office for a bit.

I re-tested the file I had created to confirm that embedding Word objects in Excel is indeed possible. And, my re-testing suggests that is should be possible to FULLY embed Word objects - including any specific formatting.

If you could email me something I could look at and work with, perhaps I could "zero-in" on a specific solution to your problem. If you have any sensitive information, perhaps you could replace it with "xxxxx" type text, and fictious numbers/data in the case of the Excel file.

It would be nice if we can confirm that this is a workable solution.
