Problem 1:
guys, if I have two slices in my partiton: c0t0d1s0 (slice 1) and c0t0d1s1 (slice 2) in my hard disk. now my slice 2 if full and i want to move some extra space from slice 1 to slice 2. how do i do it without using the link commands/

----------------------------------------------------------

Problem 2:

Say slice 2 has some empty space and i want to create a new slice 3 (c0t0d1s3). how do i do it using format. i got the format working till label command. then what entry do i have to make and too which files ?

Thanks !!

I'm not sure for the problem 1 but to allocate some extra space you might have to repartition the drive which will result in loss of data...not sure on that...
but for problem 2 the command is
newfs -vm 2 /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s3....and this command will create a new file structure for your slice3...

If you are not using veritas volume manager or disk suite, you can NOT dynamically reallocate disk space w/o losing the data.

no name is right, without some third party software you are dead in the water. But if you have veritas volume manager or disk suite you can concatenate (I think my spelling is wrong, but oh well) the two disks together effective tricking the operating system.

maunir, i can't seem to get newfs -vm 2 /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s3 working ! it only works if its slice 0, else it giver error message : /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s3: I/O error

1) is it /dev/dsk/c0t0d0s3 or /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s3 ?
2) what does the 2 mean in the command ?

Thanks !

yeah the command is newfs -vm 2 /dev/rdsk/c0t0d0s3 and the 2 is for the amount of free space you are allocating to the partition. The default is 10% but 2% is good enough...
