I am not able to create users directory in home
directory. I am logged in as root and I get the message "failed to make directory operation not applicable"

Thanks Jeff

There was a recent thread about this, but the gist is basically that Solaris expects users' home directories to be located in /export/home, rather than in /home. HTH.

Hi Jeff,

Ken is right. Just to add one thing: /home is generally used by the automounter to mount file systems via NFS.

What you can do is to have the shared users' home directories on an NFS server and if users log on to any NFS client their home dir is automounted:

Example for /etc/auto_home:

# Home directory map for automounter
#
+auto_home
trane -fstype=nfs my_nfsserver:/export/home/global/trane
tyner -fstype=nfs my_nfsserver:/export/home/global/tyner
jones -fstype=nfs my_nfsserver:/export/home/global/jones
garrison -fstype=nfs my_nfsserver:/export/home/global/garrison

Example for /etc/auto_master:

# Master map for automounter
#
+auto_master
/net -hosts -nosuid,nobrowse
/home auto_home -nobrowse
/xfn -xfn

Yep.. Recent thread about same problem has lot more discussion on this issue..

Prefer having the user home directories under /export/home/ folder otherwise refer to that recent thread.. It mentions the way out ..
