I currently do not have the licensing to produce or use the grid control nor is it likely management is going top purchase. i am tring to build a form and resulting data table that can work like a grid. I'm trying to build an estimator for construction that will list all the items in a table down the left side and areas inside a building on the top. inside the grid I need to be able to put a number that corresponds to the items needed in that room. the resulting table needs to have the item reference, location and quantity needed so i can spit out estimates by room or total. I may be overthinking this. I'm hoping there is another answer than the grid control.

Can't you just use a subform?

I can't see how that would work. I have to populate the top with the location and the side with the items. each of these are from tables that can change. i almost need to integrate or link to an excell spreadsheet with the converging rows and cloumn headings as fields as well as the cell.

You could push data to temporary table from a crosstab query. You can fill the form with the temp table in datasheet or other view. When finished editing, you could use code to push the data to your normalized tables.
