I will be creating my first static web site using SharePoint. Someone advised I would need SharePoint Designer 2007 to do this. Can I also create a static web page on the SharePoint server using any IDE such as DreamWeaver? If I can do it with DreamWeaver I assume all I need is to map to the SharePoint server and create my web page.

I would ask you to go with SPD as

1. As you are aware in MOSS all pages will have to fall under the Sharepoint Framework. SPD is the best to ensure that all pages adhere to this.

2. Not all pages sit on the disk, pages that are not in the Layouts folder are in stored in a DataBase by MOSS. These cannot be accessed via Dreamweaver.

Check with Adobe if they have some kind of plugins for MOSS. otherwise i strong suggest that you use only SPD...
