Hi Ryado,
What format is this tape, tar, cpio, fbackup......

if tar then
#tar tvf /dev/rmt/c?t?d? ( to see content of tape)
#tar xvf /dev/rmt/c?t?d? (to exteract the data to current directoyr)

I'm not sure I've understood the question, but if my interpretation is correct you're asking why make a backup copy of the tape?

If this is the question (and apologies if it isn't), it's always a good idea to copy such tapes and keep the copy in a safe place (preferably off-site at some reasonably accessible location), so that you can reapply it in the event of some disaster befalling your system which renders it useless and requires a rebuild (shudder). Hope this helps.
