Is it possible to setup a virtual extension to call an external number? We have a staff member who has an extension, but no longer works in the building. I want to be able to forward his extension to his cell phone. The problem is that the handset he was using before is being used by someone else. I want to create a new extension for phone and use the old extension to forward to an external number. Is this possible?

In theory, it should be possible. You would need to assign a new extension to replace the existing one and use the redirect line feature to forward the DID number to the cell phone.

I'm guessing that your site has DID numbers allocated to extension numbers?

That's correct. We do have DID numbers allocated. How do I go about getting a new extension assigned for the phone since nothing else is changing?

Not sure if it will work on an unused digital phone phone. It will work on an analog port for sure.

Pick an unused target line

Assign the DID received digits to that line. Prime to the DN of the port you are using.

Assign the target line to phone (A&R).

Plug a set into the port then F4 [dest code for outside line] [number you are forwarding to]

Unplug the phone.

If I am not mistaken the set must be plugged in for Call Forward or Line Redirection to work.
However Call Forward No Answer (in Capabilities) to external number might.
The Analog port idea is best.

To Change a DN look under Dialing Plan/Change DN

If unsure of programming passwords or how to navigate and program suggest you call a tech in to do and/or train.

You should mention which BCM and/or Release number when posting.

Thanks for your help. For now I'm going to hold off on pursuing the virtual extension.
