When going to the System32 folder to double click on the Wrkgadm.exe icon, it occurrs to me that I should have some trepidation as I have several databases and only want to create a new workgroup information file for one of them. I have never been here before. The area that I have been directed to looks system wide. Can I make this specific to ONE Access data base eventhough I have access to several on my LAN? If so how?

Thanks,

Dan

Prior to creating you new workgroup file, make sure you backup the System workgroup file (System.mdw). This is the default workgroup file that ships with Access and is used by all of your databases (unless you specify otherwise). Also, I would backup your database prior to creating the workgroup file.

If you're using Access 2000, check out thread181-461208 for how to setup a new workgroup file.

I have read the links here, and other sources, and understand that by adding the /WRKGRP switch to the shortcut command line, the user will then open the secured database using the correct workgroup file.

My question is: does Access revert to the default workgroup information file when this secured database is closed, or do all future instances of Access continue to use the workgroup information file specified by the shortcut, until otherwise changed?

I need to be able to run a secured database on a network where other, non-secured databases are used and created. They need to run with the default system.mdw, whereas my database needs to run with my own mydb.mdw. How can I achieve that?

The answer is YES it does default to the mdw file that you have joined by default.

If you are using the default System.mdw file as your standard workgroup file, this default is over-ridden by the shortcut only while that application is running. When you close the application you default back to the System.mdw file.

If you have set up a different workgroup file and joined that as your default (say MyWorkgroup.mdw), when you close a secured application you will default back to this file

Thank you! Thank you, thank you. That is exactly what I need to know.

Let me just make sure I have understood this...So, if I now go and get all users of Access to join (or make sure they are still joined to) the default system.mdw, then change my shortcut command line to include the /wrkgrp switch targeting (eg) MyWorkgroup.mdw, then all my problems are solved?

If so, my life is saved... I'll go and give it a try

Thanks (again), Lightning - Miranda
