I have an HP 4050n network printer, not shared or on a server, that I want to print to, from a Win98SE machine. Other MCs are Win XP so no problem creating new TCP/IP ports. "ftechguy" answered a similar problem by using "ACITS LPR" software to make the Win98 LPT port access the network printer. I have another printer on LPT port and still want to access the network printer. How do I create a new TCP/IP port on Win98? I have tried unsuccesfully HP software, but there seems no way within Win 98 to print to a non-shared/non-server network printer.

so it's not shared, it's not on a server: WHAT'S IT CONNECTED TO??

please, give us a diagram, a description: anything - just don't expect us to read minds!

It's a network printer. It is connected via its built in HP network port card, IP 192.168.36.177 to a 10/100 LAN. This is perfectly normal "manarth". Win XP machines can access it easily by creating TCP/IP ports. 'IP_192.168.36.177' I could "share" the printer but that would need a "server" to be on always. I want to access this printer from a Win98 machine without having to rely on a server running. I could convert the Win98 to WinXP, but I have old SCSI scanner cards that only work in Win98. The solution/problem is to create a virtual TCP/IP port to access the printer. This is a simple task in WinXP but how to do it in Win98. I already have a printer on its LPT port, so can't convert that using "ACITS LPR" software.

Ah, so the machine is simply plugged into a switch on the network?

I didn't mean to be short with you, but you didn't specify if it would be connected through a crossover cable, across a switch, connected via a parallel cable, etc.

Either way, a quick google found (printing using HP's JetDirect protocol). You can download drivers from the web page as well.

or
You'll need to know the IP address of the printer
