I am starting with a single layer, and there are a bunch of things that I want to Marquee, then R Click and "Layer via Copy."

The problem is, when I do this, my new layer is activated, and I have to select the first layer to do my next one.

Is there a way to prevent Photoshop from activating the new layer, and just keep the original layer activated?

...no, not currently, but feel free to submit a feature request to abobe via their website...

Thanks for the reply.

I have realized that I can do this with a very simple Action. After I marquee my area, I run a little action which creates the new layer, and then moves back to Layer 1.

...yes indeed, good work...

...and assigning a function key will allow one stroke command...
