The good old cyclic redundancy check error is driving me crazy. I am using veritas 8.5 on a 2000 server connected to an exabyte ez17 multitape drive loaded with 8mm self cleaning tapes (scsi connection). The tapes are new, old ones have been put into scratch media and new backups attempted but I am constantly getting a CRC error. Sometimes nothing is backed up, sometimes halfway through the job fails. Any ideas.

CRC could also be generated by bad SCSI adapters, terminators, bad or long cables and also by drivers.
I would recommend you to change all cables and terminators and to check for the last driver for your SCSI card.

When did your problem start?
How old is your hardware and media?

CRC errors has a lot to do with hardware and media.
Some type of drives have bigger problem with CRC errors.

I have seen a lot of CRC errors on DAT and DLT but on our STK 9940 I haven't seen one since we implemented the drives in the beginning of 2001.
