I have a Dell server running Win2kSBS with an Adaptec 29160 SCSI adapter and an Exabyte VXA-2 drive.

Backup Exec 9 gives me CRC errors, but Microsoft Backup works fine.
To test, Backup exec also gives CRC errors on a backup to disk on external drives and internal drives.

After searching the Veritas site, they said to disable synchronous negotiation but I cannot find any Adaptec software that will run on win2k. How can I do that?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Reboot the server and ctrl-a during post for most adaptec cards. I would lower the transfer rate on the scsi port the drive is attached to.
What type of extenal disk - on a RAID controller or the adaptec card. Have you tried different driver for the adaptech card , etc.

Thanks.

I have IDE drives internally and the external is USB 2.0.

I got crc errors when trying to back up to an internal file and an external file.

Ok, per Veritas' instructions I have disabled removable storage manager for the tape drive, updated drivers, verified compatibility lists, cleaned my brand new drive, using brand new media and they still cannot get it to work. Won't back up to tape, won't back up to disk. Drive is on controller by itself at id:11. Still doesn't work. Any ideas?

BTW, I can back up to tape just fine when using Microsoft Backup.

We have had crc error problems every once in a while also. When we completely re-installed Backup Exec, it eliminated the errors. In fact we are getting errors right now and we are going to re-install tonight.

Veritas finally responded to my requests.

per their advice, I increased some timeout settings in the registry. Now, I still get errors when backing up the system state unless I stop the Trend Micro antivirus messaging suite.

So, I will just live without my system state being backed up.

Oddly enough, both Veritas and Trend think it is quite acceptable to disable all protection while the backup runs. They said that if I am concerned about infection of my exchange server during the backup (with antivirus disabled) then I can just unplug the network cable while the backup runs.

I guess I will have to start spending the night in my office.

Pretty funny. (not)

Make sure your not doing a update of virus defs at the same time your backing up. Like Symantec Mail Security, there is an option to scan the info store when new defs arrive. I had that set to update at 3am, I also had BE backing up exchange at 1am, so while my backing was running, the virus scan stared after the virus defs were updated at 3am. Then symantec would see that veritas was touching the info store or files and would scan. This caused problem. Also the job would run for 12+ hrs. Off setting the Live Update to run in the day at 3pm worked.
