Crazy screen antics

On a NT 4.0 workstation, the screen does some crazy things after about 15 minutes to 4 hours of operation. It does not seem to refresh properly. I have installed the latest video driver, the latest windows updates, and service packs. This machine has had 9 months of previous operation with no problem. Antics are things like menu bar areas go to solid gray color (but if you know where the buttons are they still work), icons on desktop rapidly flashing, clicking on Start opens two menus and neither work, toolbars go from bottom to top with no warning, Ctrl+Alt+Del does not work, fonts change for no reason, desktop background goes blank, the list goes on and on. After a couple minutes of this, it just freezes up completely and I have to do a cold boot. If I catch it early enough, logging off and on clears it up, but it comes back after a while. Microsoft website is NO help. Any ideas anyone?

Just a thought what service pack are you on. May be worth going to SP5.

(I still dont trust SP6a) ;-)

Try changing the graphics adapter.
Curiously when did the problem first occur? Before or after a system change, such as SP level?
SPs can interfere with propriatory drivers.

Changing colors could surely point to the graphics card. Your problem however seems to me at least to be more along the line of virus related.

I would have to agrea with al on this on. When you have vid card/driver problems they usually dont just show up after x amount of time.

FunGuy -

Once you've tried the above, make sure you don't have fastfind (MS OFFICE) in your startup and from the Desktop properties, double check the system fonts have not been changed to an unsupported (unworking) font. Good Luck. [sig][/sig]
