crazy Outlook Express

My hard drive starts making crazy noises about a minute or so after I open Outlook Express. It just makes the noises without me doing anything at all (it's not downloading or receiving when it does this). The noises can last anywhere from 5 seconds to a minute.
any ideas?

Try to setup some maintenance option in Outlook express
Tools --> Option --> Maintenance
