Crazy File Sizes Excel 2007

I am having some crazy file size issues with Excel. I built a file (series of files) that contain large data sets, pivot tables, the works. The native file is 10,165K. If I ZIP it up, I can get it down to 2146K.

Which I did and emailed to a co worker for feedback. Said co-worker made additions and corrections to some of the data and emailed back the Excel file. All data, formulas, pivot tables etc are in tact. The file size is now 790K.

I have been able to narrow down that she is running Excel 2003 while I have 2007. But even if I right click the file in the documents folder and save as to convert to 2003, I can only reduce the file size to 5MG.

Has anyone had any experience with this sort of phenomena? Have I got some sort of crazy setting that is blowing my file sizes out of proportion?

(PS. I have checked the Share Workbook settings and it is not set for sharing - i know that causes big files. In this case, he isn't the culprit)

Please let me know. I am desperately eager to try to reduce the file sizes for better usability.

Thanks in advance!

That's the way it is under Excel 2007. Don't shoot the messenger, but that's just the way it works. Saving under compatibility mode in Excel 2007 ( i.e. so as to be readable in Excel 2003 ), does not save at the same file sizes as in native Excel 2003.

Cheers, Glenn.

You know what is weird? I converted the files to 2003. They reduced by about half. Then I converted them back to 2007. That got them down to under 1 mg.

There was no loss of integrity in the data or formulas or anything. I am wondering what the impact will be - if any.
