Do I have the worst enviroment *reading some of posts here makes me think soo (Help) ????

Trying to install Netbackup4.5 I have a Compaq Server which has to be the Master Server(three NICs one GB).. I have three media servers and two client machines. (All Win2k SP3.

I have zero documentation and never installed this before.

I have ran through the installation wizards three or four times now and manybe getting towards the solution on where it should work. *but I have ran out of ideas now*

the last install I decided it would be better for custom install and installing with domain account. (is this correct or the most recomended way)? Do I have to do anything to the machines in order for permissions to work etc???

I installed the master server then the three media servers, The globle domain Manger is the same name as the Master server.

From the master server everything is connected and running *backups dont work* but when viewing from media server it only shows the master server and its status is down.
if I start this from the media server then it stops the master server.
*so some sort of communications are working..*

Does services such as VNC, terminial services pc-anywhere have communications problems with netbackup.

there will other questions sorry to any inconvince that reading this may cause ;)

You need to start from the beginning.

Your NICS are a good starting point - Multiple NICS on one server - How are they configured, i.e. port aggregated, Fast ether, separate IP's etc? If they are on separate IP's then you have to specify in Veritas, which NIC is the preferred communications NIC.

The install account must be a domain admin equivalent account - No exceptions despite what some may tell you - I have played with this until the cows came home and the only guarantee was when a domain admin accoutn was used - Needed only on the NetBackup Client Service.

Your master - Name? We will use Master for arguments sake... When you install the software on media servers and clients the first entry int he list MUST be MASTER. The name resolution must work for forward and reverse lookups - DO NOT use FQDN's during the install as 4.5 uses system DNS settings and appends suffix's as appropriate which is why DNS must be 100% - If it is not - Get that fixed first.

Client - Let's say that client1 wants to back up to media1. The server list on the client must contain MASTER as the first entry and then media1 etc as the next entries.

Start there and we'll proceed after this has all been verified.

NICS separate IPs, Where in Veritas do I specify which NIC is preferred?? Have not seen this option anywhere...

I have tried this and done many installs as Domain admin etc..

Been using all wizards when installing and configuring clients and media servers.

I have tested this on two other machines Master/Client *backing up to hard drive* and everything worked straight away zero hassle.
The problem is there are many differences between the master installation from desktop and the main server etc.

maybe if I can use the correct NIC this will solve some of my problems but not sure where this option is located.....

Bring up the properties of the client in question and under the "Universal Settings" tab is ...
Required Network Interface.

Ok I have placed the settings into Universal settings...
I can not get into U.Settings for the media server is this correcT????

I run a manual backup etc. and always get the following

1/27/2003 5:28:02 PM - connecting
1/27/2003 5:28:02 PM - connected
1/27/2003 5:28:07 PM - end writing
network read failed(42)

Why???

the other main thing I notice is when viewing activity monitor from media server I see only master server and not all the other information that I see from the master server etc...

Stopping and starting the "master" services from the media server works..

"NetBackup Device Manager" allways stops when trying to do a backup....

Just changed the time out settings and now get

1/27/2003 6:04:28 PM - end writing
request attempted on a non reserved port(45)

????
thanks for all help and patience

On all (Master, Media and client, when you bring up properties there is a "Servers" tab. For any server from which you wish to administer other that servers name must be int he servers list - This gives it the authorization. On my master I have all my media servers listed as do I on all media servers and clients, this includes and desktops etc functioning as administration consoles. If you do not have this, the messages etc may be very misleading as you do not have the necessary security rights. To rule that out do the administration from the master as it should already be listed on all media and client servers.

I would wager a bet that you have some DNS issues as this has been the cause of many, many problems. Take any media server, right click on "My Computer" - "Properties" - "Network Identification" - What is the FQDN? Make note of case as NetBackup is case sensitive. Do the same for your master server. Now in the servers tab - Do you have the correct case for all? Do not have FQDN's in the servers tab. If you ping a media server from the master via netbios name what comes back?
C:\WINNT>ping media

Pinging media.domain.com [192.168.1.2] with 32 bytes

Reply from 192.168.1.2: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=127

Reply from 192.168.1.2: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=127

Note - "Pinging media.domain.com" - Does this match what is under "Network Identification"? Do you have "Enable DNS for Netbios resolution" enabled?

Do you have a domain suffix? If so, what is the resolution method - DNS/HOSTS/LMHOSTS etc?

Guess what the server that is the DNS is also media server.
One lan connection was down and it was not part of the same domain in stead was a workgroup.. I sorted this and now get

request attempted on a non reserved port(45)

An attempt was made to access a client from a nonreserved port.

Verify that the latest software is installed on the client and server.
* On Windows NetBackup servers, check the install_path\netbackup\version.txt file or the About NetBackup item on the Help menu.
* On Microsoft Windows clients, check the About NetBackup item on the Help menu.
* On NetWare target clients, check the Version entry in the bp.ini file.
* If this is a NetBackup for NetWare client and has a version of NetBackup earlier than 3.0, verify that the client is in a Standard type policy.
* On Macintosh clients, check the version file in the bin folder in the NetBackup folder in the Preferences folder.

**this is all coming from the same CD***.

I have removed the media servers from the server tab in Universal settings.. All FQDN are correct and lower case...

Regards

Why did you remove the media serveers from the servers tab? In order for authentication, they have to be there. Check your services file under winnt\system32\drivers\etc - On all media servers etc you should have ...
bpcd 13782/tcp
bprd 13720/tcp
bpdbm 13721/tcp
vmd 13701/tcp
acsd 13702/tcp
tl8cd 13705/tcp
odld 13706/tcp
ts8d 13709/tcp
tc8d 13710/tcp
tldcd 13711/tcp
tc4d 13712/tcp
tl4d 13713/tcp
tsdd 13714/tcp
tshd 13715/tcp
tlmd 13716/tcp
tlhcd 13717/tcp
lmfcd 13718/tcp
vopied 13783/tcp
bpjobd 13723/tcp
rsmd 13719/tcp
nbdbd 13784/tcp
vnetd 13724/tcp

These are the ports being used for each process. Upgrade to MP3. When you add a storage unit - The MASTER must be rebooted else the job stays queued.

Unfortunately - I am still convinced from all that youhave said that your DNS is not working somewhere, there is a name resolution problem. Simply put ... If you open the administration console on the MASTER and cannot bring up the properties for a media server or any client - It is not resolving names or the MASTER is not the firs entry in the list.

I have also seen cases where proxy clients cause problems and generally should never be installed on a server running NetBackup.

I have also seen a server with multiple NICS where the bindings order has caused issues. After I set the interface for the backups as the first entry in all bindings - Problem resolved.

Hey thanks dude... I have fixed the problem...
I think it was a case of one. installing by the wrong procedure and the DNS server being totally buggered..

How I got everything working.. un-install the lot...
install master server *custom using domain admin* as I was..
adding all media servers to the additional servers here..

then install media servers adding all other media servers to their list....

then go through the config for storage etc...

____

placed the DNS server inside the domain ;) *this buggered quite a few people up to be honest lol but a reboot later their DHCP settings got changed*
____

now everything is working fine backing up over network etc.. and everything else... bloody confused me though..

thanks again hope to help you next time...
