crash after logout

Hi,
I have been running fedora core 3 for some time now. Just recently when I log out of gnome the screen goes blank. Pinging from another machine gets no reply right after the logout. This is from root and my user account. All I can do is hit the power button to get it back up. As long as I stay logged into gnome everything seems fine. Any ideas where to trouble shoot would be appreciated.

Try Ctrl-Alt-F1 to switch to console 1 and then Ctrl-Alt-F7 to switch back to the graphic desktop.
This will let you see if it's a graphics card mode switching issue.
No guarantees but it's a quick and easy test to start with.
