I initialised my astpsdat database and the message came up that it would create a new database and clear the old one.

Instead I have now have over five hundred files in the folder called

astpsdat.000
astpsdat.001
astpsdat.002 etc

Only the first three files have data in them - the rest are empty. Is this normal?

Thanks David - another question for you, every time I try a backup it fails and the database engine shuts down. There are then .cat files in the temp directory. Yesterday i ran mergecat.exe which got rid of these and then initialised the astpsdat database.

Unfortunately this didn't work - the database engine again shut down and I have new .cat files appearing.

Sounds like database corruption.

If you want to preserve the info run the utility dbcheck to check all the databases. Then run dbfix, dchain, and keybuild on all the databases with errors &/or inconsistancies. See vldb doc in ARCserve folder and faqs in this forum.

If you don't care out the info or care more about your time just initilize all the databases.

If you want shut down all the services and close the manager and then make a backup copy of database directory. Then if you want you can always copy it back and you will be right were you were before.

Thanks David - I think it was database corruption. I tried running the vldb tool like you suggested and it did turn up a load of errors.

Unfortunately I think it was beyond repair - after I ran the tools I was still getting the same error and couldn't get a good backup.

I took your advice and reinitialised all the databases and started from scratch.

Just in time too - my mail server went tits up the next day.

Thanks for your help
