I have found the V8 reports to be consistently faster than v7. The greatest savings are in the generation of previews.
Still, the single biggest factor in speed is the design of the report. By using stored procedures with parameters to filter data, you can move data manipulation onto the database server, and greatly reduce network traffic. Subreports, especially if they are placed anywhere but in the report header or report footer, can slow reports down to a crawl.
Version 8 has one nice feature - the running totals actually work in this version. Doing a conditional weighted average is a pain in SQL, but is handled nicely in Crystal. I was so surprised when it actually generated the right numbers, too!
The product has a money back warranty, so you can try it out. It will save reports in V7 format, so you don't have to commit to V8 till you feel comfortable with it.
Malcolm Wynden
wynden@island.dot.net
