Hi,

I am searching for the right tool for a reporting system. The final outputs of this application are really-nice-looking (including graph and pie-charts) hard copy report book and online application which displays all those reports. Is CR the right choice? I have experience in writing CR and convert to PDF and the whole process was automated by writing a VB program. However I want to use Java to write the application part. I was first thinking of JSP but I think html is too limited to make a good looking report (am I wrong?). So is it possible to generate the CR reports within Java code and display online? Do I need to buy any extra package other than CR, such as library for Java? Can the reports be displayed as they are or should they be first converted to PDF? Sorry for so many questions but please help me to make the right choice.

Thanks,
Shine

If you want presentation quality reports, including graphs and charts, you really can't go past Crystal Reports.
Have a look on their website for information on CR vers 9.

It includes a Java SDK, for integration into your application. The Java SDK comes with CR9. You will not need to export them to PDF for display. The SDK includes a server side viewer, zero client.

You can invoke reports from Java, there's an SDK.

select the Java PDF.

Implement using RAS, and use a DHTML, Java or Active-X viewer in the native CR format, which allows users to then export reports to numerous formats.

I would suggest that you NOT use a PDF format unless the data has no value beyond viewing it.
