CR Pro and Enterprise handle text objects differently

Hi
System Info:
CE 8.5 up to date ( I think)with SPs
CR 8.5 Pro

Situation:
A report designed in CR Pro uses a text object containing a database field that can have varying length.
The text object is sized to fit the printable width of the page, and, in CR Pro, it nicely constrains the right margin, and the field's contents stay within the text object boundaries - the field property is set to 'can grow', so the # of lines does vary but the width stays constant ( like I would expect).

The Problem:
When this same report is published and viewed ( Active X viewer, if that matters) the Field text extends past the right edge of the text box and, therefore, gets cut off when printed, since it is beyond the margin. The same printer drivers are on the designer PC as on the CE Server, so I don't think it is the 'classic' formatting problem;it appears to be a difference between CR Pro and CE in how database fields within text boxes are handled.

Any ideas greatly appreciated.

John

Are you sure your viewer is patched? I seem to remember something like this was addressed in a hotfix (although it could have been v9) - sorry for the vagueness.

How does it look using another viewer?

Thanks,
I'll check out the patch issue and try other viewers
( and test it on my new CE10 installation, as well) when I return to the office on Monday.

It is a curious problem, I've never encountered it.

If the OS's differ, then the printer drivers will differ, and if you use a font that is not installed on the server, Windows will substitute, but still it shouldn't extend beyond the object's width.

Perhaps you can switch to using a formula instead of a text object and just concatenate with better results.

Hi, More info:

ActiveX viewer has the latest Hot Fix..

If I switch to the Java viewer, problem goes away.

The underlying field is a varchar2(2000) ( in Oracle) and is not 'seen' by the formula editor( so I cannot use Trim,on it, for instance)
Could the size of the field affect its handling by the viewer? Or its behavior in a text box object?

More when I test more ...

Thanks,
John

Hi,
If it will help, I have a jpeg showing the outline of the text field and the text 'ignoring' it when it wraps..

I cannot post attachmentts here ( I think) so, let me know where to email it if you want to see it.

Thanks,
John

Hi,
Yet more info:

It works fine when enclosed in a text object in CE10, so it looks like it was a bug..

Hi,
The field that is causing problems has embedded CRLFs - if we create a view that removes them using
Code:
 SELECT replace(replace(field_in_question, chr(10), ' '), chr(13), ' '), etc

It seems to work fine...
Is this 'normal' behavior when large fields ( > 255) have special characters in them?
