CR 10 - grab data to report on, away from office

At work, using Crystal Reports 10, I can access our database that is hosted on by an outsourced vendor/server.

I'd like to be able to work on these reports at home with a company laptop, but we don't have access to the hosted server.

Other than the "Save Data with Report" command, is there a way to create a report that does indeed save the data, and let me add/delete/edit the different fields on the laptop, away from the office?

Is there anyway I could export the report into a file that contains ALL fields I may need, then allow me to access that file and start modifying the report on the remote computer?

Does the question even make sense?

Thank you for any tips/suggestions/etc.!

Crystal reports server. All you need is an internet connection.

Thanks for the tip dgillz! As far as you know, is that my only option?

Thanks again,

Hi,
If, as you say,

and your data is on that server, then there is no method to do what you want..except by creating a database table on your laptop with the same data as on the host server..

Turkbear,

Thanks for the suggestion!

Is there a way for Crystal Reports to somehow help me create the database table on my laptop? (The database is actually hosted on a windows server, and the hosting folks could only give me a back-up copy, which they explained could only be opened via an SQL windows server environment, which is another thing I'm still trying to learn about).

Again, thank you Turkbear,

You could explore or services like it that allow you to remotely access your work pc and gain access to anything you can access from there. Of course, your company might have security concerns or rules that prevent you from using this.

Hi,
If you have access ( while at work) to that data you maybe can, using the same connection you use with CR ( is it ODBC?), import the data table into Access on your laptop..That way you will have a copy to use away from the office..

lbass,

Actually they DO allow VPN, so I'll give that a shot...thanks for the suggestion!

Turkbear,

I didn't realize I could do the MS Access thing...I will try that as well, if nothing else, to always have copies! Thank you!

One quick and dirty thing I often do is to drag all of the fields from the table(s) onto a suppressed report footer. Then refresh and save with data. I now have ALL fields stored in the RPT and can use them off line. I can do this with as many records as I want. All that data stays in the RPT until I refresh it again.

Ken,

What a great idea! I'll try that as soon as I get into the office tomorrow.

Thank you Ken!
