My PC rarely runs higher than 10% CPU Usage in Task Manager. I check it often and 5% is average. My computer was running slower so I checked it and it is now averaging 30% with nothing running. What steps would you suggest taking to determine the cause of this problem?

Open the Windows Task Manager, go to the Processes tab, and sort by CPU. This call show you which processes are using the CPU and to what extent

I hate it when it does that. Could be anything. Yea, see what programs are causing problems. it could be a program. One time I had the same problem, ended up being the motherboard/cpu/ram cant tell ya which. Client decided to just get another PC. Had to be one of those. same hard drive. same type of motherboard and all.. so..

Down load Ad-aware and run the updates. Run the default settings, you may be surprised what you see.

Also, a good idea to stop uneeded programs from booting up. Copy msconfig from a WinXP machine or install startupCPL. While you are at it, you may as well disable any background services that you do not need.

Have a look at:

Scroll about 1/3 of the way down to find which services are uncessary and disable them.
