CPU Usage spikes

OK, got a Compaq laptop running windows 7 with 3gb ram, was running poorly, the CPU usage was very high. After cleaning the system all is good with one exception, CPU usage is 1% to 4% but every 50 seconds it spikes to 25% for just a moment, then drops back off. I have closed everything I know that could cause this but no help. I know this will not interfere with normal use but it bothers me that it is so time perfect, 50 seconds.

AV has a tendency to do that.

Have a dig in this set of sysinternals tools like process monitor and you can watch and log in real time what is causing the spikes.
