CPU Problems

Hi,
I have a KM2M Combo L mobo running on AMD Athlon XP 1.67GHz 266MHz FSB Socket A PGA Processor and 2-All Components. 32X64 256MB PC-2100 DDR266 Memory module. 8-chip. 184 pins.

My problem is that the cpu strats but it dosent do anything else any Ideas are appreciated...

Try one stick of ram, if no boot try the other.If no boot again pull that stick and check for beeps. If you get any you're looking at a ran compatibility problem. Ed

Explain a little more about what you have done.
Is this a new PC?
Are you trying to boot from a pre-loaded (old) OS installation
Did the PC just stop booting, or did you change a hardware component or load software before the breakdown.
Try resetting the Cmos clear jumper.

Hi Paparatzi,

Yes it is a New PC and I have done the Following:
1)-resetting the Cmos clear jumper.
2)-Try one stick of ram, if no boot try the other.If no boot again pull that stick and check for beeps.
3)-I have also tried removing peices of hard to see if it works but nothing... it yust turns on and Back of
4)- The mobo is not doing any contact with the case
5)- All things are compatible.

Turns on, spins the fans for a few seconds then stops?
Sounds like the motherboard is turning itself off, could be that the motherboard is having a problem detecting the CPU fan! either the CPU fan is plugged in the wrong fan header? or it is a slow RPM unit (some motherboards have a problem detecting these low RPM fans) so the fail safe mechanism shuts down because it thinks that there has been a fan failure.
Also have you fitted the CPU heatsin/fan unit the wrong way around? it may not be obvious but there is a recess in the base of the heatsink that MUST be fitted so it fits over the RAISED part of the CPU socket. If the heatsink is the wrong way around the CPU will overheat in a matter of a few seconds and shut off.
Also, you must use a small amount of heatsink paste applied to the small raised core of the CPU only (equivelent to about 1-2 grains of rice in volume)

I believe this is the Asrock board?
I have had the same problem with 2 different boards now, including the newer K7VM4.
I have tried
New PSU, New CPU, New heatsink and fan * 3 (including a decent 5000rpm)
The only thing I have failed to swap in the board (again)
If you manage to find a fix, (i am about to try flashing the bios hoping this may influence the cut off) please let me know
