I have reports that are very complex. One report has over 200 variables in it. In order to save time I always send these reports off to BCA to run as it takes forever on my machine. But it still takes almost 15 minutes to open the report when I get it back and switching between tabs can take up to 5 minutes. I also noticed that it is taking 100% of my memory on my CPU. If I have other programs open the blue bug appears, which I know means that there is not enough resources on the machine. Why is the report re-generating variables when I open the report. MAybe taht is not what BO is doing, but the less variables I have the less time it takes to open. Why is this generation not being done on the server? Is there a way to set it up so that the report does not re-generate the variables on open?

That's the way it works. Variables are not evaluated until you open the report. They calculated values are not stored.

What operating sytem are you working with? And what are the specs of your PC?
Increasing CPU and memory can have dramatic effects on performance. With early 4 versions of BO (back in 1998) we went from a Pentium 133 to something like a Pentium 2 300 with double the amount of memory. Performance increase (formatting) was 6-fold.
We used this testdata to convince management we needed new hardware for reporting purposes :)
Reports with 200 variables will never be easy to handle, but the blue bug indicates to me some old Windows version. (?)
No matter the size of the report, other applications keep functioning under W2000.
Reports as complicated as yours should be created on a suitable machine, otherwise efficiency as a report designer
will be low...

Blom,
I do agree with your comments about system size. However, the issue likely isn't that the creator has problems. All of the consumers of this report will have the same problem. It isn't practical to get everyone a machine big enough for this report.

The reality is that a report that has 200 variables in it likely needs to be redesigned. Many of those variables should be migrated into the universe.

It sounds to me like the universe doesn't meet the reporting needs.

Hmmm,

I agree partially, but if it resembles the financial reports I have seen that took 2 hours to format, this may be a report that uses variables on variables on variables
combined with complex filtering.
Question how much can be resolved by redesigning the universe.
You are right about not upgrading every PC to meet the specs, but if this is once per month report, the department may run it during lunchtime and have little to complain.
I was however pointing out that a lot of time will be lost in creating the report, and efficiency can be improved by a much faster workstation (for the designer of the document)
