Hi,
Just purchased a second hand Mac G4.
taken the plunge and switched from PC for the first time.

Will be delivered in a couple of days

Its got 400Mhz CPU and wondered if it was easy to replace the cpu to a faster on i.e. 1gig.

Also its got 256Mb Memory.......is there two slots like in a PC...allowing you to add another 256Mb to it. If so what type of memory does it use.

Hope someone can help cheers guys

Apple made two very different 400Mhz G4 power macs, one based on an earlier G3 motherboard nicknamed Yikes, and a later one based on a new G4 motherboard nicknamed sawtooth.

Both have CPU upgrades available, but they are very different parts, both have 4 RAM slots and can use 1.5 gig of 8ns SDRAM

I tried to remain child-like, all I acheived was childish.

I would also point out that 400 is probably the absolute floor for trying to run Tiger, and I would also upgrade to at least 512 megs of ram before trying it.

what type of memory do i need to get????. Any ideas...does it depend on the previous post saying either the yikes or sawtooth?

... it would be nice if you thanked jimbopalmer & ObviousTroll for their comments

Kind Regards

Sorry, not being ungreatful. Was going to do all the thanking at the end of the thread.

Ok...but if you insist.

Thank you Obvious Troll and jimbopalmer...much appreciated.

dthomas, I think Duncan was referring to that little button that appears under each post.

We can't tell you what kind of RAM you need without knowing the exact model your getting. Once you know that, you can check Apple's own support site, it will tell you exact what kind you need.

If you're shopping for RAM, one of the best places to go is crucial - I think or link from They have a handy system to narrow down what is available for your machine - as noted, you need to be certain of your model, so wait until it arrives to check. Nowt worse than a hasty and incorrect purchase.
