cpio -file too large error

I've got SCO 5.0.6. I've been running full system cpio backups to a dat drive for ages. I recently installed an SDLT drive. I tried to run a full system backup to it and after a while it came back with

cpio: I/O error on write() : File too large (error 27)

Is there somewhere on SCO which determins the size of a tape drive because I cant understand why this would fit on a dat but not on an sdlt.
