cpio error

My cpio backup stops prematurely with the message: "cpio: can't open /dev/tty for writing."

Can anyone tell me why?

Is this at the beginning of the backup or after it has been running for a while? If it happens after it has been running for a while it is possible you are running into the end of the tape.

Can you write to the tape using tar?
