cpio error code 5

Having succesfully used the following cpio command for 3 years,

echo "FILENAME" | cpio -ovB -Hodc > /dev/rct1

I am now receiving the error message

cpio:I/O error on write():I/O error (error 5)

I have used 4 separate tapes with no success. Is this a hardware problem with the tape drive?
