When using the cpio command is there a way to put a date and time stamp at the beginning of the backup tape? When putting date sensitive material to a tape it would be helpful to be able to read a time and date stamp rather than wade through multiple files to check for the most current date.

Not sure if this is what you want, but why not just write a timestamp (date +%d%m%y or whatever) to a file and write this to tape, followed immediately by your cpio backup as the second logical tape. HTH.

Tar a datestamp file to the non-rewind device then cpio. Datestamp would be visible with tar tv.
