courier-imap problem

I realize this is a qmail forum, but I'm having a problem with courier-imap, and have always received great help here.

The problem is when I try to telnet to imap2:
telnet localhost imap2
I get:
trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to 127.0.0.1.

but then when I try to login I get:

and in the syslog I have:

I don't know what I'm missing, and I've been going absolutely nuts with squirrelmail since about 2 days ago, when I figured I'd give it a try. any help you guys can give would be greatly appreciated!!

obviously my imap config was all messed up, so I recompiled vpopmail, courier-authlib, courier-imap, and reset squirrelmail to default, and voila . . . couldn't get ssl to work though . . .

Squirrelmail doesn't use SSL, do you need direct IMAP too?

Squirrelmail uses TLS, which is supported by courier-imap, and installed along side of SSL. I may have had some kind of config error with TLS, but I didn't need either because Squirrelmail is on the same server as courier-imap and finally qmail. I just wanted to see if I could get SSL working . . . guess not!
