I've been trying to get Courier IMAP working for the last few hours, but nothing seems to work. I'm using qmail with Maildirs and that's working, so at least I'm getting something done. Anyway, when I try to get mail from Netscape, nothing happens. (And I've tried configuring with and without --enable-workarounds-for-imap-client-bugs) When I run netstat right after that, I see an entry for IMAP with TIME_WAIT... Anybody have any idea of what might be happening?

From the server, run the following command and let us know if you can get in or not...

telnet localhost 143

This will tell you if IMAP is running and if its working okay. If your trying to run POP, instead of IMAP, then substitute the 143 for 110. Courier-IMAP includes an IMAP and a POP3 server.

# telnet localhost 143
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to 127.0.0.1.
Excape character is '^]'.
Connection closed by foreign host.

Run 'netstat -nat' and look for 143. This will tell you if an IMAP server is running. It doesn't look like its running. Did you start the IMAP daemon? Depending on your setup, this command (or a similar one) should start the deamon...

/usr/lib/courier-imap/libexec/imapd.rc start

That worked... Before, I was using chkconfig and a script in /etc/rc.d/init.d that I downloaded, so it looks like I'll have to do that on my own. I have another problem, though--Netscape prompts for the password, but it says I can't connect. Looks like I have authdaemond set up incorrectly. I'm trying to use shadow passwords...

Well, I have imapd.rc and imapd-ssl.rc starting at boot, but my authentication's still failing...

I fixed it by recompiling with authpam.
