For a long time Windows user who is learning the Mac (Tiger) I have a couple questions:

1. On WinXP I can use the keyboard shortcut [WINDOWSKEY] + [L] to lock the screen in whatever application I am. I use this a lot, every day whenever I leave my computer. Is there some similar keyboard shortcut on the Mac? I've researched a bit and found information about using the screen saver password protect, but I don't want to wait for it to activate.

2. Generally when I delete a file/folder, I use [SHIFT]+[DELETE] to delete it straight off without going into the recycle bin. Is there a way to do this on the Mac? 99% of the time the Recycle bin is useless to me and it's just extra work and clicks to have to empty it after deleting it.

3. In Windows for my Ethernet connection I always turn on the property "Show icon in notification area when connected." This puts in my taskbar the two computer monitor icons that blink when there is network traffic. It's a constant handy visual representation showing that the network us up and working (or not). Is there a similar type of graphical tool on the Mac that would be always running in the corner of the screen showing me that network traffic was flowing?

Thanks

1. In the equivalent of the control panel is the option to set a hot corner to activate the screen saver. So you just run the mouse to a corner and you lock the screen.
2. Option shift backspace.
3. OS9 used to do this at the top left. Not looked at any option in Tiger as gig to the desk means I really don't care.

#3 go to Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor and launch.

In the icon in the dock, right click and go to Dock Icon/Show Network Usage.
To increase/decrease the update frequency go to Monitor menu in Activity Monitor and choose update frequency.

To make this always active (unless you physically quit) make an alias of the application and put it in Library/Startup Items.

Using OSX 10.3.9 on a G4

1) You could also create a new dummy user account and use fast user switching. Simply select the user name by the clock to switch between users.

You could also start Keychain Access and select "Show Status in Menu Bar" to enable the Lock-All-Screens capability that it has.
